Les Houches, Chamonix
Les Houches village has preserved much of it’s Haute Savoie character including Baroque churches and chapels, and is a stark contrast to more modern purpose built ski resorts. Its location within the Mont-Blanc valley provides exceptional views of the Mont Blanc Massif, and yet it is only 5 kms from the cosmopolitan and historic sports town of Chamonix.
Skiing in the Chamonix Valley is extremely varied and provides endless descents and enjoyment for all skiing abilities. The Les Houches ski area is perfect for beginners and intermediates and as a warm up mountain for the more advanced skier. Les Houches differs from its neighbouring ski areas in that it is the most picturesque ski area in the valley, with tree lined runs and spectacular views. It also offers the best mountain restaurants in the valley, most of which are privately owned. There is a cross country ski area on the top of the mountain, and a number of walks which can be done on foot or using snow shoes, again on top of the Les Houches ski area allowing one to take in the fabulous alpine views.
The other ski areas in the Chamonix Valley are only a short drive away and offer more challenging skiing. Especially famous to advanced skiers are the Vallee Blanche and the Grands Montets ski area.
In summer, Les Houches turns into a vibrant landscape with colourful mountains overlooked by snow capped peaks, providing a perfect setting for hiking, cycling and many other activities. There is a fabulous swimming pool in Chamonix Town (open air during the summer months) and France’s largest indoor climbing wall is located in Les Houches. And if you are not an active person, then there are plenty of less energetic activities. How about a day in a thermal spa, a husky ride, a trip on the Montenvers Train to view the spectacular glaciers, some wine tasting or participating in some cookery courses. And there are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose to eat in, and shops to browse…
For families the Chamonix valley offers a wide range of walks for all ages and abilities: strolls along the valley, hikes on the lower and upper balconies (mountain terraces), swimming, play areas and the Chamonix Town Train are just a few on the list. Local to Les Houches and in the heart of a forest lies a Tyrolienne Traverse – an adventure course of 50 different activities including rope ladders, beams and bridges, Tibetan bridges, rope walks and Tarzan swings!
The Chamonix Valley is a beautiful place where you can be inspired, relax and get away from it all. The chalet is ideal for those who enjoy a peaceful environment, stunning alpine scenery and also require easy access to the mountains and everything else that the Chamonix Valley has to offer.
